European Union Troops Participate in India’s Republic Day Parade for the First Time

New Delhi, January 26, 2026: For the first time, troops from the European Union (EU) participated in India’s Republic Day parade, highlighting the growing strategic, defense, and diplomatic ties between India and Europe. The parade was graced by Antonio Costa, President of the European Council, and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, who attended as chief guests.

The EU contingent included military staff flags and banners representing naval operations such as Operation Atalanta and ESPIDES, marking Europe’s first participation in such an event outside the continent.

There were three key reasons for their inclusion:

  1. Defense Cooperation: The contingent reflects the expanding collaboration between India and the EU in international maritime security and defense operations.
  2. New Tradition: This aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative to invite troops from friendly nations to the Republic Day parade.
  3. International Dimension: The presence of EU troops positions India’s Republic Day as a global platform, showcasing India’s diplomatic outreach.

PM Modi hails EU leaders’ participation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the presence of the EU leaders as a testimony to the strengthening India-EU partnership and shared values. In a post on X, he said, “Hosting Antonio Costa and Ursula von der Leyen during the Republic Day celebrations is an honour for India. Their presence underscores our growing partnership and commitment to shared principles.”

He added that the visit of the EU leaders will deepen engagement and accelerate cooperation across multiple sectors between India and Europe.
