The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), in collaboration with the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, has launched a special internship program for engineering students, offering them hands-on experience on over 150 national highway projects across the country.
Hands-On Exposure to Advanced Engineering
According to Dr. Vineet Joshi, Secretary, Department of Higher Education, the program is designed to give students practical exposure to advanced engineering challenges and innovative infrastructure solutions. “This initiative will prepare the next generation of professionals to actively contribute to India’s infrastructure development,” he said.
Selected interns will receive a monthly stipend of ₹20,000, along with support for travel and professional growth. Internships will range from one to six months, and each project will accommodate four interns. Students from IITs, NITs, and AICTE-affiliated institutions are eligible to participate.
Initial Cohort and Future Expansion
The program will initially include a pool of 600 students, with plans to expand to postgraduate students in the future. The initiative also aims to strengthen the global performance and recognition of Indian Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), with guidance provided on improving rankings and research outputs.
Workshops to Support Global Rankings
Orientation and training workshops are also being conducted for institutions, focusing on QS World University Rankings parameters. These workshops aim to help HEIs improve research output, academic reputation, and international engagement, ensuring students gain both practical experience and exposure to global best practices.
With this program, engineering students will not only gain invaluable field experience in large-scale infrastructure projects but also develop the skills needed to become leaders in India’s growing infrastructure sector.
