Indian students studying in the U.S. have been warned about strict rules regarding part-time employment, after reports emerged of students being taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The Incident in Minnesota
A video circulating online shows ICE agents reportedly detaining two students in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, sparking concern among Indian communities. While the authorities have not officially confirmed the identities of the students, reports suggest they may have violated their F-1 student visa conditions by working off-campus without proper authorization. The students were reportedly released after questioning.
Rules for Part-Time Work on F-1 Visas
F-1 visa holders are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week, but only on campus. Many students, however, take up off-campus jobs in restaurants, petrol stations, or daycares in exchange for cash. Such work is a direct violation of U.S. visa regulations, and students risk visa cancellation or deportation.
Advice for Indian Students
Indian NRIs and community groups have urged students to avoid off-campus part-time employment and adhere strictly to the rules outlined in their study permits. ICE continues to conduct checks across Minnesota, including schools and workplaces, to ensure compliance with visa conditions.
With these strict enforcement measures, students are reminded that even a minor violation could have serious legal consequences in the U.S.
