Delhi-NCR Rain Alert: Weather Set to Change, Relief for Pollution-Hit Residents Expected

New Delhi: After prolonged exposure to rising pollution and poor air quality, residents of Delhi-NCR can expect some relief soon. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast indicating a change in weather patterns from 23 January, with rain and strong winds expected in several areas. These conditions are likely to significantly improve air quality in the region.

Weather Outlook
The current cold spell has been eased slightly by daytime sunshine, providing temporary comfort. However, the IMD has warned that intense rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds is likely over the next few days, bringing the cold back. While the cold may return, the rain will help clear airborne pollutants, offering respite to residents struggling with smog.

Rain and Temperature Details
On 23 January, the maximum temperature in NCR is expected to reach around 20°C, while the minimum may drop to 10°C. Rainfall could occur intermittently throughout the day, with wind speeds of 30–40 km/h, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. On 24 January, the temperature may fall further, with a maximum of 20°C and a minimum around 7°C, along with moderate fog.

Moderate fog conditions are expected to persist on 21 and 22 January.

Current Air Quality Index (AQI) Levels
Air quality remains hazardous across Delhi-NCR. In Noida, AQI readings are:

  • Sector-1: 352
  • Sector-116: 341
  • Sector-125: 328
  • Sector-62: 322

Delhi’s readings are also alarming:

  • Rohini: 387
  • Jahangirpuri: 391
  • RK Puram: 375
  • Punjabi Bagh: 370
  • Pusa: 368
  • Patel Nagar: 365
  • ITO: 366

In Ghaziabad, Loni recorded AQI 423, classified as extremely dangerous. Vasundhara and Indirapuram recorded 381 and 341 respectively, while Sanjay Nagar registered 319.

Experts predict that rain and strong winds will help reduce pollution levels, but the ensuing cold for 2–3 days may pose challenges. The IMD has advised residents to stay vigilant, limit outdoor activities, and take precautions against the cold.
