New Delhi: The Delhi-NCR region is currently enveloped in a thick blanket of smog, making daily life extremely challenging for residents. The toxic haze has obscured the blue skies and even the sun, prompting some citizens to consider leaving the city temporarily.
Smog Crisis Reaches Unprecedented Levels
The severity of pollution in Delhi-NCR has reached alarming proportions. Experts warn that the combination of vehicular emissions, industrial activity, and seasonal factors has created a hazardous environment for millions. Health risks, reduced visibility, and respiratory issues are now daily concerns for residents.
Learning from China’s Clean Air Transformation
China, once notorious for its heavily polluted cities, offers a model for addressing such crises. Decades ago, cities like Beijing, once dubbed the “smog capital of the world,” faced severe environmental, social, and economic challenges due to rapid industrialization and soaring vehicle numbers.
However, in a determined effort over the past decade, Beijing launched an aggressive campaign against pollution. The city implemented strict emission controls, promoted sustainable mobility, and reduced reliance on fossil fuels. Today, Beijing’s air quality has improved significantly, demonstrating that large cities can reclaim their blue skies with focused policies and long-term commitment.
Recently, the Chinese embassy in India expressed its willingness to guide Delhi on adopting similar measures to tackle its persistent pollution crisis.
Can Delhi-NCR Achieve the Same?
Experts say that replicating China’s success will require coordinated efforts from the government, industry, and citizens. Measures may include stricter vehicular emission norms, expansion of public transport, promotion of electric vehicles, and stronger enforcement of environmental regulations.
With China’s experience as a blueprint, Delhi-NCR could potentially reverse its current pollution trend and restore healthier, breathable air for its residents.
