December Cold Wave Hits Northwest India; Rain Alerts for Four States, Delhi and UP to Experience Fog and Chilly Mornings

New Delhi: With the onset of December, northwest India is experiencing a sharp drop in temperatures, while parts of southern India are likely to receive heavy rainfall in the next 24–48 hours, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Delhi is expected to witness falling temperatures and chilly winds over the coming days, while Uttar Pradesh currently experiences moderate cold with morning fog continuing in many areas.

Weather Forecast for Delhi

The IMD has predicted that Delhi’s maximum temperatures over the next few days will range between 22–24°C, with minimum temperatures dropping to 6–9°C. A cold wave alert has also been issued, indicating that residents will experience colder-than-normal winds.

  • December 3: Morning fog and haze expected; afternoon will see brief sunlight. Day temperature: 23–25°C; Night temperature: 7–9°C.
  • December 4–6: Maximum temperatures may drop to 22–24°C. Dense fog expected in several areas during the mornings. Night temperatures could fall to 5–8°C.
  • December 8: Light morning fog expected; clear skies and sunshine will provide mild warmth during the day.

Weather Forecast for Uttar Pradesh

While Uttar Pradesh is not currently experiencing extreme cold, morning fog will continue in several districts, particularly in western and eastern regions.

  • December 3: Clear weather during the day with light to moderate fog in the mornings.
  • December 4–5: Dry conditions expected; morning fog alert remains in effect.
  • December 6–8: Weather expected to remain largely unchanged with foggy mornings. Night temperatures are now beginning to drop noticeably, although no severe cold wave warning has been issued.

Overall Outlook

The IMD has highlighted that northwest India, including Punjab, Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana, western UP, and parts of eastern Rajasthan, will experience colder-than-normal temperatures from December through January. Several regions could witness 4–5 additional cold wave days during this period. Southern states including Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala are under rainfall alert.

Residents are advised to take precautions against cold and fog-related travel disruptions and keep updated on further weather warnings.
