
New Delhi: Addressing the ninth convocation of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan emphasized that debate, discussion, dissent, and even disagreement are critical components of a healthy democracy. However, he stressed that such processes must ultimately lead to decisions, and collective will is necessary to implement them effectively.
Key Highlights from the Speech
Radhakrishnan urged graduating students to dedicate their knowledge and skills to national service. Reflecting on the teachings of Swami Vivekananda, he highlighted that education should extend beyond degrees to character building, intellectual growth, and empowerment, enabling students to become self-reliant.
He also referred to India’s rich educational heritage, mentioning ancient centers of learning like Nalanda and Takshashila, and stressed the importance of cultural and ethical grounding in education.
Wisdom from Indian Scriptures
The Vice President noted that texts ranging from the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita to Kautilya’s Arthashastra and Tiruvalluvar’s Thirukkural consistently place education at the center of social and moral life. He reinforced that true education shapes character and conduct, and is not limited to obtaining degrees.
PM Modi’s Vision for a Developed India
Radhakrishnan highlighted that education and proper training are key for India’s youth to contribute meaningfully to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed India by 2047.
Democratic Values and Responsibilities
Referring to JNU’s culture of democratic discourse, he reiterated that debate and dissent are essential, but must conclude in actionable decisions. He urged graduates to uphold three key responsibilities:
- Intellectual honesty in the pursuit of truth
- Social inclusion to reduce inequalities
- Active contribution to national development
He also called on them to adhere to constitutional values, respect India’s cultural ethics, and always honor their teachers and parents.
