New Delhi: The Congress high command has intensified efforts to resolve the reported differences between Rahul Gandhi and Shashi Tharoor, with hopes that both senior leaders will meet soon. The party anticipates their meeting during the upcoming Parliament session in Delhi on January 28.
Background of the Rift
The issue came to light after Tharoor reportedly skipped a crucial meeting convened by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi to discuss preparations for the Kerala Assembly elections. Rahul Gandhi’s office reached out to Tharoor to understand the reasons for his absence. Party sources indicate that had Tharoor attended, Gandhi would have personally engaged with him to ease tensions.
The differences reportedly began after Tharoor felt overlooked at a recent ‘Mahapanchayat’ in Ernakulam, organized by state leadership and attended by Rahul Gandhi’s representatives. Concerns have been raised that disgruntled leaders like Tharoor could negatively impact the United Democratic Front’s (UDF) prospects in the elections. Consequently, state leaders have appealed for intervention from the high command.
Why Rahul Gandhi’s Intervention Matters
Tharoor enjoys substantial popularity among youth, professionals, middle and upper-middle-class voters, and non-political sections in Kerala. Party insiders believe that Rahul Gandhi’s direct engagement is necessary to address Tharoor’s concerns effectively, as interventions from other leaders may not carry the same weight.
Media scrutiny surrounding the issue has also accelerated the party’s decision to act swiftly. Observers note that Rahul Gandhi’s involvement is unprecedented, signaling the party’s readiness to accommodate Tharoor’s sentiments. Leaders are conscious that the rift, if left unresolved, could undermine claims of party unity—a unity highlighted during a recent Wayanad leadership meeting attended by Tharoor. A KPCC official expressed concern that a discontented Tharoor could adversely affect election outcomes in Thiruvananthapuram, particularly if CPM and BJP strengthen their positions.
Looking Ahead
Tharoor’s team has confirmed that he will be in Delhi for the Parliament session on January 28, and it is expected that the two leaders will meet at a mutually convenient time, paving the way for reconciliation ahead of the elections.
