Congress Questions PM Modi: Why Allow US to Pressure India on Chabahar Port?

New Delhi: Congress has targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi over a media report concerning the Chabahar port project, alleging that the PM is yielding to American pressure. The party claimed that India has quietly stepped back from the strategic project under US influence, undermining the country’s foreign policy. The government, however, has not made any official statement on the matter.

Why is Congress Angered?
Pawan Khera, Chairman of Congress’s media cell, emphasized the strategic importance of Chabahar. He said the port provides India with a crucial maritime route to Afghanistan and Central Asia, bypassing Pakistan and countering China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

Khera remarked, “To hear that India has retreated from Chabahar under minor US pressure, silently and without any public debate, marks a new low in this government’s foreign policy. The real question is not about the port or Russian oil—it is why PM Modi is allowing Washington to dictate India’s national interests.”

What Does the Media Report Say?
According to a report by ET Infra, India’s decade-long, turbulent engagement in developing Iran’s Chabahar port has nearly collapsed. Earlier, US President Donald Trump had warned on 12 January that any country doing business with this Gulf nation would face a 25% tariff on all transactions with the US.

The report also stated that US restrictions re-imposed on 29 September 2025 had significantly weakened India’s strategic initiative at the port. Despite these developments, the Indian government has not released an official response.
