New Delhi: Amid rising airfares during the festive season and the ongoing IndiGo crisis, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu clarified in the Lok Sabha on Friday that the government cannot regulate airfares throughout the year. He emphasized that final ticket prices are determined by demand and supply, which naturally fluctuate during peak travel periods.
DGCA Takes Action
Following the IndiGo disruption, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) found negligence in monitoring the airline and removed four officials, including the Deputy Chief Flight Operations Inspector (CFOI), from the wing responsible for overseeing IndiGo operations.
International Expert Review
The IndiGo board has decided to conduct an independent investigation with external experts. Chief Aviation Advisors LLC has been appointed for this purpose, led by Captain John Ellson, a globally recognized aviation expert with decades of experience in international regulatory bodies including FAA, ICAO, and IATA. The IndiGo CEO has already shared detailed operational information with the DGCA.
Refunds for Cancelled Flights
Passengers affected by IndiGo’s flight cancellations faced major inconveniences, with many stranded at airports. In response, the airline has initiated refunds for cancelled tickets. IndiGo stated that its teams are working meticulously to ensure all refunds and compensations are processed promptly. Most refunds have already been completed, and the remaining will be processed soon.
The Civil Aviation Ministry emphasized that while airfare regulation cannot be imposed year-round, passenger interests remain a priority during disruptions.
