“Be it Trade or Ceasefire, Trump is Taking Decisions for India,” Congress Attacks Modi Government over US Trade Deal

New Delhi: The Congress party has raised questions over the India-US trade deal, criticizing the Modi government for its handling of negotiations. In a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, Congress said, “Just like the ceasefire, the trade deal announcement is coming from Trump. It is being claimed that the deal is being done at the request of the government.”

The party expressed concern that key announcements affecting India are being made by US President Donald Trump, calling the situation “regrettable.” Congress further stated that Trump has promised that India will reduce tariffs and non-tariff barriers for the US to zero, effectively opening the Indian market completely for American goods. “This will cause severe harm to Indian industries. Our traders and farmers are being left behind,” the post added.

Congress also raised questions regarding agriculture and energy. “The deal reportedly opens up the Indian agricultural sector for the US. Were the interests of Indian farmers safeguarded, or have they been left out? How will their safety be ensured? It has also been indicated that India will not purchase oil from Russia but will instead import from the US and Venezuela. Has the Modi government agreed to abandon Russia?”

The party further questioned the implications for domestic manufacturing under the Make in India initiative, highlighting concerns over increased imports from the US. “What are the specific terms of the trade deal? What has been agreed upon? The country and the Parliament have the right to know. The Modi government must share all details with the nation and the legislature,” Congress demanded.
