New Delhi: In a significant step towards strengthening bilateral ties, India and Bangladesh have agreed to release each other’s fishermen who were inadvertently caught across the international maritime boundary. Following the agreement, Bangladesh released 128 Indian fishermen, while India handed back 23 Bangladeshi fishermen. The move was confirmed in a press statement by the Ministry of External Affairs.
The fishermen on both sides were detained after unintentionally crossing into the neighboring country’s territorial waters while fishing. Indian authorities had earlier detained Bangladeshi fishermen under similar circumstances.
Successful Repatriation Completed
On 29 January 2026, both governments successfully facilitated the release and return of all 23 Indian and 128 Bangladeshi fishermen along with their boats. Earlier, in December 2025 and January 2025, India had helped release 142 Indian fishermen and coordinated the return of 128 Bangladeshi fishermen.
Focus on Humanitarian Concerns
The exchange considered the humanitarian and livelihood needs of the fishing communities on both sides. Indian High Commission officials monitored the welfare of the Indian fishermen while in Bangladeshi custody, providing essential items including warm jackets. The Indian government reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety, security, and well-being of its fishermen.
This gesture comes as a positive development amid broader diplomatic challenges, emphasizing cooperation and goodwill between the two neighboring nations.
