Bangladesh Suspends Visa Services in Delhi Amid Rising Tensions, India Focuses on Humanitarian Needs

New Delhi:
Tensions between India and Bangladesh have escalated as attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh continue. In a show of defiance, the Bangladeshi government suspended all consular and visa services at its High Commission in Delhi on Monday, citing “compelling reasons.” The move comes amid ongoing protests and diplomatic unrest.

Despite Bangladesh’s actions, India is maintaining a measured and humanitarian approach. The Indian government has kept visa centers operational for medical applicants, ensuring that urgent needs are addressed even as security concerns persist.

Background of the Controversy

Bangladesh claimed that protests near its High Commission in Delhi posed a threat to the High Commissioner and his family. India strongly rejected this assertion, pointing out that Bangladesh is attempting to create a false narrative amid attacks on Indian diplomatic missions in Bangladesh and anti-India demonstrations outside Bangladeshi missions in India.

Attacks on Indian Officials

The tension intensified after demonstrators threw stones at the residence of the Indian Assistant High Commissioner in Chattogram. Despite the presence of Bangladeshi security personnel, protesters got dangerously close to the diplomatic premises. Similar anti-India demonstrations led to temporary closures of visa services in Dhaka and Rajshahi.

India’s Focus on Humanitarian Needs

A senior official at the Indian Visa Application Center in Dhaka emphasized that humanitarian requirements remain India’s priority, and visa operations in Dhaka, Khulna, Sylhet, and Rajshahi will continue as long as security allows. Although the Dhaka center was briefly closed due to protests, it resumed operations the following day, ensuring uninterrupted access for medical visa applicants.

Bangladesh’s Defiance vs India’s Diplomacy

The Bangladeshi High Commission in Delhi announced that all consular and visa services will remain suspended indefinitely, without specifying a reopening date. Meanwhile, Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma visited the IVAC in Dhaka to review visa operations and interact with applicants. This diplomatic engagement highlights India’s balanced approach of firmness and compassion in handling the escalating situation.

Key Takeaway:
The suspension of visa services in Delhi underscores Bangladesh’s aggressive stance, while India continues to prioritize humanitarian needs and maintain calm, measured diplomacy amidst rising tensions.
