Amid US Tensions, Iran’s Foreign Minister to Visit India; Chabahar Port High on Agenda

New Delhi: Against the backdrop of escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is scheduled to visit India next week. The highlight of his visit is expected to be discussions on the Chabahar Port, a strategically vital port managed by India in southeastern Iran. Observers note that the visit also carries broader geopolitical implications, given ongoing US sanctions and regional trade dynamics.

Strategic Importance of Chabahar Port
Chabahar Port, operated by India Ports Global Limited under a 10-year agreement signed in 2024, is not only crucial for Afghanistan’s connectivity but also provides a gateway to Central Asia. Through the port, India and Gulf countries can access key trade routes, while Russia’s Central Asian regions are also linked via this corridor. The port is envisioned as part of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), facilitating trade from Eurasia to the Indian Ocean.

US Sanctions and Expiry of Waiver
India secured a six-month waiver from US sanctions in October 2025 to operate Chabahar Port. This waiver is set to expire in April 2026, making Araghchi’s visit timely. The 10-year lease allows India to manage the port’s operations, in partnership with Iran’s Port and Maritime Organization, marking the first instance of India overseeing a foreign port’s management.

Economic and Humanitarian Significance
Chabahar Port serves as a lifeline for India-Afghanistan economic cooperation and humanitarian assistance. Last October, India supplied ambulances to Afghanistan via Chabahar. The Taliban administration is reportedly keen to leverage the port for global trade and strategic access. Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Tajikistan are also interested in using Chabahar to enhance trade and connectivity with the Indian Ocean.

India-Iran Diplomatic Milestone
The visit coincides with 75 years of diplomatic relations between India and Iran. During his stay, Araghchi is expected to meet External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal. He will also engage with the business community, visit historical exhibits, and discuss further strengthening bilateral ties. The future trajectory of Chabahar Port’s development is likely to gain clarity following this high-level engagement.
