Amazon Pay Introduces Biometric UPI Payments in India, Eliminating PIN Hassle

Amazon Pay has become the first payment app in India to introduce biometric UPI authentication, allowing users to make payments using their face or fingerprint instead of entering a UPI PIN. This innovative feature is designed for users who prefer faster, hassle-free transactions without repeatedly typing their PIN.

Under this feature, transactions up to ₹5,000 can be completed using facial recognition or fingerprint authentication. Payments exceeding ₹5,000 will still require the four-digit UPI PIN for security purposes.

Amazon has stated that during initial testing, around 90% of users opted for the biometric option instead of entering their PIN, indicating strong user acceptance.

The biometric UPI feature is aimed at reducing “transaction friction” by making digital payments smoother across multiple modes such as Send Money, Scan & Pay, and online merchant payments. Since biometric data cannot be shared or stolen, the feature also enhances security. Additionally, users can make payments easily with one hand, adding convenience to everyday transactions.

Currently, this feature is available only for Android users whose smartphones support fingerprint or face unlock. Amazon plans to roll it out for iOS users soon. With PIN-free UPI payments, users can save time while enjoying a safer and more seamless payment experience. Experts predict that this method could set a new standard for digital payments in India.
