After Trump’s Assertiveness, Global Order Shifts: What It Means for India

New Delhi: The world is currently witnessing unprecedented geopolitical turbulence. Europe is actively seeking to reduce its dependence on the United States and carve out a distinct global identity, while India is reassessing its foreign policy directions.

Trump’s Tariff Diplomacy and Global Friction

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly used tariffs as a strategic tool against countries worldwide, asserting America’s dominance in global affairs. India, however, has resisted bowing to American pressure. Several other nations have also expressed strong displeasure at Trump’s tariff wars and uncompromising approach.

This evolving scenario points to the potential emergence of a new world order. Yet, conceptualizing such an order is far from simple. China, Russia, and the European Union (EU) pursue their own strategic interests. If a new global framework emerges to reduce US dominance, India is likely to play a pivotal role.

Strengthening India-EU Ties

Europe, recovering from multiple crises—including the Russia-Ukraine war, China’s economic pressure, and fragmented global economic and energy systems—is now looking to establish an independent, sovereign future, distancing itself from US dominance. Europe possesses the intellectual, industrial, and financial capacity for this transformation and is seeking reliable partners for mutually beneficial collaboration.

India is emerging as a natural partner for Europe in this context. A strong India-EU partnership holds immense potential across trade, technology, security, and global challenges. Both sides anticipate a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that could deepen economic ties.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen made her first visit outside Europe to India in February 2025 with her full cabinet, signaling the growing importance of India-EU relations. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s multiple visits to Europe have further reinforced these strategic ties.

Impact of Trump’s Statements on Greenland

Trump’s assertive statements on Greenland disrupted long-standing transatlantic relations based on security, economy, and shared values, creating diplomatic friction. Despite global challenges, the EU has demonstrated unity and determination on key issues, including the Ukraine conflict.

India’s Strategic Opportunity

For India, Europe’s strategic pivot presents a unique opportunity. The India-EU relationship is multidimensional—encompassing trade, investment, defense, and technology. The anticipated India-EU Free Trade Agreement, restarted in 2021 with a broader scope, is one of the most significant developments. EU investment in India and trade in the Indo-Pacific region are growing rapidly.

European countries such as France and Germany have long-standing strategic partnerships with India, covering defense, nuclear energy, space cooperation, and consistent support in multilateral forums. Spain, Italy, and the Nordic nations are also prioritizing ties with India, reflecting a broader strategic engagement. Together, India and Europe can play a central role in addressing the major global challenges of our time.
