Following the recent terrorist attack targeting Jews in Australia, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar visited Israel and met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to express solidarity and strengthen bilateral cooperation in combating terrorism. The meeting was held in Jerusalem, and official photos were shared on the Israeli Prime Minister’s social media accounts.
Before the meeting, Jaishankar strongly condemned the attack, emphasizing that India and Israel both categorically reject terrorism. In a tweet, he noted that he conveyed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s greetings to Netanyahu and discussed ways to deepen cooperation in technology, economy, skills and talent, connectivity, and security. Regional and global developments were also discussed during the talks.
Condemnation of the Terrorist Attack
External Affairs Minister Jaishankar expressed his deepest condolences to the families of those killed in the Bondi Beach Hanukkah Festival attack in Sydney, Australia. He praised Israel for its cooperation with India in the fight against terrorism and reiterated India’s commitment to supporting Israel in addressing global terror threats.
Details of the Attack
Last week, during the Hanukkah celebrations at Bondi Beach, two attackers opened indiscriminate fire on the crowd, resulting in 15 fatalities and 40 injuries. The attackers were identified as Sajid Akram (50) and his son Naveed Akram (24). Investigations revealed that Sajid Akram was originally from Hyderabad, India, and had settled in Australia 27 years ago. He held an Indian passport and was killed during police action. His son Naveed, an Australian citizen, was seriously injured and is currently undergoing treatment.
This meeting underscores India’s strong support for Israel in the fight against terrorism and highlights the countries’ commitment to cooperation on security, counter-terrorism, and global peace initiatives.
