Who is Saurav Tyagi? From Running a Medical Store to Supplying Banned Cough Syrup from Ghaziabad to Bangladesh

Ghaziabad, November 3, 2025: In a major crackdown, the Ghaziabad SWAT team intercepted a massive consignment of banned cough syrup that was bound for Bangladesh. Acting on intelligence from Sonbhadra Police, authorities raided a warehouse near Gulhar on the Delhi-Meerut Highway and recovered nearly 1.5 lakh bottles of codeine-containing cough syrup hidden under lime bags in four trucks.

The operation led to the arrest of eight people involved in the illegal trade, but the kingpin behind this racket has been identified as Saurav Tyagi, a resident of Makhanpur in Sahibabad, Ghaziabad. Tyagi, who originally ran a medical store, gradually entered the illegal cough syrup business after coming in contact with suppliers of banned medicines. He quickly emerged as a major supplier, handling distribution not just across Ghaziabad and the NCR region but also reaching as far as Delhi.

Tyagi was also the treasurer of the Ghaziabad Chemists and Druggists Association, giving him the cover to expand his network. Despite the growing number of child deaths linked to codeine-based syrups, Tyagi continued the trade by rerouting shipments abroad after the banned brands were prohibited in India.

The seized consignment, estimated to be worth around ₹3.5 crore, was intended for export to Bangladesh. During the raid, police also recovered approximately ₹20 lakh in cash. Prior to this, similar consignments had been intercepted in Sonbhadra, with intelligence from that district helping Ghaziabad police foil this major shipment.

This seizure marks a significant blow to the illegal pharmaceutical network operating across the NCR and neighboring regions.
