Traditional Mithila Festival Sama-Chakeva Celebrated with Great Fervor in Indore

Indore, November 3, 2025

The spirit of Mithila’s traditional folk festival Sama-Chakeva came alive in Indore as Indore Sakhi Bahinpa Maithilani Group organized a grand celebration at Meghdoot Garden. The event beautifully showcased the essence of Mithila’s culture — the warmth of the brother-sister bond, the rhythm of Maithili folk songs, and the earthy aroma of clay and tradition.

A large number of women from the Maithil community participated in the event, recreating the charm of Mithila’s rural festivities. They crafted clay idols of Sama and Chakeva, placed them in traditional bamboo baskets, and performed rituals with deep faith and devotion. Amidst melodious Maithili folk songs, participants symbolically performed the ritual of burning “Chugla” and “Vrindavan”, representing the victory of truth and purity of sibling affection.

Speaking on the occasion, Ritu Jha, the head of the Maithilani Group, said, “Sama-Chakeva is one of Mithila’s most cherished folk festivals, symbolizing the eternal bond between brothers and sisters. Celebrated for seven days — from Kartik Shukla Saptami to Kartik Purnima — the festival reflects love, prayers, and blessings for brothers’ long life and prosperity.”

The festival will conclude with the immersion of Sama-Chakeva idols on Kartik Purnima, marking the end of the celebration.

Group members Sushma Jha, Shweta Mishra, and Soni Jha expressed that, “Sama-Chakeva not only preserves Mithila’s rich cultural and folk heritage but also serves as a beautiful bridge to pass this legacy on to the younger generation.”
