Thane-Borivali Twin Tunnel Project: Reducing a 1.5-Hour Commute to Just 15 Minutes

Mumbai’s ambitious Thane-Borivali Twin Tunnel project is set to revolutionize commuting in the city, significantly reducing travel time between the western and eastern suburbs. The 11.8-kilometer twin tunnels will directly connect Ghodbandar Road in Thane to the Western Express Highway in Borivali, potentially cutting the current 60–90 minute commute down to just 15 minutes.

Project Overview

The tunnels will pass beneath the environmentally sensitive Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP). Advanced tunnel-boring technology is being employed to minimize environmental impact, ensuring sustainable construction. Each tunnel will feature three lanes, including an emergency lane, with cross-passages every 300 meters for safety.

Key modern infrastructure includes:

  • Ventilation systems
  • Firefighting equipment
  • Smoke detectors
  • LED navigation signboards

Officials highlighted that the project will not only reduce travel time but also help ease traffic congestion and pollution, contributing to a more efficient urban transport network in Mumbai.

Casting Yard and Environmental Measures

A 22.6-acre casting yard has been allocated at SGNP near Mira Road, where concrete sections like beams, parapets, and other structures will be prepared. Of this, 5 acres fall under the Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ), and environmental safeguards are being implemented during construction.

Project Phases

The project is being executed in three packages:

  1. Package 1: 5.75 km tunnel between Borivali and Thane
  2. Package 2: 6.5 km tunnel between Thane and Borivali
  3. Package 3: Installation of ventilation systems and other safety equipment

The MMRDA aims to complete the project within three years, using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) for safe and efficient excavation.

Cost and Funding

The total estimated cost of the project is ₹14,401 crore, with funding shared between the state government (₹1,144.60 crore) and the central government (₹572.30 crore). Land acquisition costs amount to approximately ₹700 crore.

Impact on Commuters

Once completed, commuters will experience significantly faster and smoother travel, reducing dependence on congested surface roads and improving connectivity across Borivali and Thane suburbs. The project promises to be a transformative step in Mumbai’s urban infrastructure development, ensuring safer, cleaner, and quicker journeys for millions of daily passengers.
