Rajasthan Takes Firm Stand Against Misleading Ads — After Bata Fine, Film Star Salman Khan Summoned by Kota Court

Jaipur (Rajasthan): Misleading advertisements continue to land major companies and celebrities in legal trouble. After the Bata Shoes fine earlier this year, a Kota district court has now issued summons to Bollywood superstar Salman Khan and Rajshree Masala Company over allegedly deceptive advertising claims.

According to reports, the court took cognizance of a complaint filed by BJP leader and Rajasthan High Court advocate Inder Mohan Singh Hanee, accusing the company and its brand ambassador Salman Khan of misleading consumers through false claims in their product promotions.

‘Kesar in Every Grain’ Claim Under Scrutiny
Rajshree Group manufactures and markets various spice products and cardamom sachets. In its advertisements, Salman Khan is seen claiming that the company’s masala contains “Kesar (saffron) in every grain” and that its cardamom is “saffron-infused.”

However, the claim has raised serious doubts. Given that the market price of saffron is nearly ₹4 lakh per kilogram, the court questioned how such an expensive ingredient could be part of a masala pouch sold for just ₹5. The complainant argued that such claims are factually impossible and misleading, prompting the court to issue notices.

Court Orders Salman Khan and Company to Appear on November 27
The Consumer Protection Court, Kota, has directed both Salman Khan and representatives of Rajshree Company to appear before it on November 27 to present their clarification. The actor may either appear in person or send a legal representative to defend the case.

The matter has sparked wide public interest, with consumers across Rajasthan and other states awaiting the court’s decision on this high-profile case.

Earlier, SRK, Ajay Devgn, and Tiger Shroff Were Also Summoned
This is not the first time celebrity endorsements have drawn legal scrutiny in Rajasthan. Two months ago, the State Consumer Commission in Jaipur had issued summons to Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Tiger Shroff for promoting Vimal Pan Masala with similar claims that it contained saffron in every grain. The order was passed by Commission President Justice Devendra Kachhawa and Member Karuna Jain in response to an appeal filed by Gajendra Singh Thakur.

Bata Fined ₹61,000 for Charging for Carry Bag
Earlier, the Bata Company was fined ₹61,000 by the consumer forum for overcharging a customer for a branded carry bag. A young woman who purchased shoes from a Bata outlet in Jaipur was asked to pay ₹6 for a carry bag bearing the company’s logo, despite her refusal to buy it. The consumer commission ruled in her favor, holding the company guilty of unfair trade practice and penalizing it accordingly.

Consumer Rights Strengthened in Rajasthan
The series of actions by Rajasthan’s consumer courts underline a clear message — deceptive advertising and unfair trade practices will not be tolerated. Whether it’s a multinational footwear brand or a celebrity-endorsed spice company, the judiciary has shown that consumer protection laws apply equally to all.
