The ongoing private bus strike in Rajasthan, which has paralyzed public transport for the last three days, is likely to end soon. A delegation of private bus operators met Deputy Chief Minister and Transport Minister Premchand Bairwa on Monday, where a positive dialogue was held over ending the strike. Sources indicate that an official announcement to call off the strike could come as early as Monday evening.
Operators Seek Two Months to Modify Buses
During the meeting, the bus operators requested two months’ time to carry out necessary safety modifications in their vehicles. Currently, around 8,000 private buses remain off the roads, leaving thousands of passengers stranded across the state.
Deputy CM Bairwa emphasized that passenger safety cannot be compromised. He said,
“Many buses are operating without fire safety systems or emergency exits. Such modified buses will not be allowed to ply under any circumstances. The government cannot tolerate any risk to passengers’ lives.”
Where the Talks Stand
Government sources suggest that if both sides reach a final agreement, the strike may be officially called off tonight. The restoration of bus services would bring major relief to commuters suffering from limited transport options since the strike began.
The state government, however, remains firm on its stand that unsafe buses will not be permitted on roads, even temporarily.
Bhajan Lal Government in Action Mode After String of Tragic Accidents
The Bhajan Lal Sharma government has stepped up safety enforcement following three major bus accidents in just 15 days.
- On October 14, a fire in a bus in Jaisalmer claimed 28 lives.
- On October 29, in Shahpura (Jaipur), an electric shock incident killed a father and daughter, injuring ten others.
- The most recent tragedy occurred in Jodhpur on November 2, where 15 people lost their lives.
These incidents have pushed the government to act decisively, triggering stricter safety regulations — which in turn led to the current standoff with private bus operators.
