“My Fight for Dignity Isn’t Over…” — Kangana Ranaut Apologizes, but 78-Year-Old Farmer Woman Refuses to Forgive

Four Years On, Punjab’s Mohinder Kaur Continues Her Legal Battle for Respect After Kangana’s Controversial Post During Farmers’ Protest

Bathinda (Punjab): In a significant turn in a four-year-old defamation case, BJP MP and Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut appeared before a Bathinda court on Monday and tendered an apology to 78-year-old farmer woman Mohinder Kaur. The case stems from the farmers’ protest of 2020-21, when Kangana allegedly made derogatory remarks against Kaur on social media.

Ranaut told the court that she regretted her misunderstanding and expressed remorse for her comments. The court granted her bail and scheduled the next hearing for November 24.

For Mohinder Kaur, this was not just another court date — it was a moment of emotional victory in her long struggle for dignity and respect.

Who Is Mohinder Kaur?

Mohinder Kaur hails from Bahadurgarh Jandian village in Bathinda district, Punjab. Despite owning 13 acres of land, her life is far from affluent. Her home is modest — its ceiling supported by wooden beams. Every morning, she cooks on a clay stove for her ailing 80-year-old husband Labh Singh and bedridden son Gurdas, before resuming her daily chores and legal battle.

“People think 13 acres is a lot,” she said, “but in reality, the income from farming is less than what a small government employee earns. Nobody understands a farmer’s pain.”

Once a cotton grower, she was forced to switch to paddy cultivation after widespread crop failures across Punjab.

A Family in Struggle

Kaur’s only son has been bedridden for three months due to a severe infection, while her daughter-in-law passed away from illness about a year and a half ago. The family now leases most of their land and grows only a small portion for household use.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Kaur said emotionally, “A farmer’s life is never easy. My son is unwell, my daughter-in-law is gone, and I have no grandchildren. The whole responsibility of this house is on my shoulders — but I will not give up.”

Due to her age and health, Kaur could not attend the recent hearing. Her asthmatic husband appeared in court on her behalf.

The Lawyer’s Stand

Interestingly, Kaur’s lawyer Raghubir Singh Behniwal is associated with the BJP. “When I took this case,” he said, “some people doubted whether I would fight sincerely against Kangana. But I gave my word — I cannot tolerate the insult of Punjab’s mothers.”

He added, “Kangana’s apology is just a formality. We will not accept it. This fight will continue until justice is done.”

What Was the Case About?

The controversy dates back to December 2020, during the farmers’ protest, when Kangana shared a tweet featuring an image of an elderly woman at the protest site — allegedly Mohinder Kaur’s photo.

In her post, Kangana claimed that certain protesters were being paid to join demonstrations and referred to the woman as the “same dadi” (grandmother) who was featured in TIME Magazine’s list of India’s most powerful women — a reference to Bilkis Bano of Shaheen Bagh. Kangana allegedly wrote that the woman was “available for ₹100.”

The post quickly went viral, drawing widespread outrage. Feeling deeply insulted, Kaur filed a defamation suit through the court, seeking to restore her dignity.

A Symbolic Fight for Respect

For Mohinder Kaur, this legal battle is not about money or fame — it is about self-respect.
“My fight is for my honor,” she said firmly, “and I will not step back — no matter who stands against me.”
