In a concerning incident during a routine test run, a Mumbai monorail coach hung off the track between Wadala and GTB Nagar stations on Wednesday morning. Thankfully, no passengers were aboard, preventing any casualties. The Mumbai Fire Brigade and monorail officials promptly responded to stabilize the situation.

Incident Details

According to the BMC Disaster Management report, the incident occurred around 9 AM near Wadala East, close to RTO Junction, during routine testing of the monorail system. Monorail Control Officer Rohan Salunkhe confirmed that the derailment was caused by a technical malfunction. The coach tilted and hung off the track, but immediate action by on-site staff ensured there were no injuries.

Officials have ordered an internal investigation to determine the exact cause of the technical failure.

Context: Monorail Safety Concerns

This mishap comes amid a series of technical challenges faced by Mumbai’s monorail network:

  • August 20: Heavy rains disrupted monorail services between Chembur and Bhakti Park, stranding over 500 passengers until rescue operations could be carried out.
  • September 15: Another monorail near Wadala experienced a software-related malfunction, leaving 17 passengers stranded. Services were partially disrupted for more than two hours that day.

Currently, monorail services have been suspended due to ongoing maintenance and safety testing, following earlier incidents during the monsoon.

Official Response

Monorail authorities assured that all necessary safety protocols were followed and emphasized that the system will not resume full passenger services until comprehensive testing and repairs are complete.

Residents and daily commuters have been advised to follow alternate transportation routes until normal operations are restored.
