Major Setback for Grand Alliance: Former RJD MLA Suresh Mehta Joins BJP, NDA’s Strategic Move to Curb Kushwaha Votes

Aurangabad, Bihar: In a significant political jolt to the Grand Alliance (Mahagathbandhan) in Bihar, influential Kushwaha leader and former MLA Suresh Mehta officially parted ways with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) on Wednesday, joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) along with his supporters. This move is widely seen as a calculated strategy by the NDA to weaken RJD’s hold on the Kushwaha community.

Suresh Mehta, who played a pivotal role in the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections by leading the Mahagathbandhan to victory across all six constituencies in Aurangabad, made the announcement alongside Gopal Narayan Singh, former Rajya Sabha member and father of NDA-supported BJP candidate Trivikram Narayan Singh, at a press conference.

Why He Left RJD

Mehta revealed that he owes his initial political journey to Shakuni Chaudhary, the father of Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary, who brought him into RJD and secured him a ticket in the 2000 Assembly elections. Despite losing two subsequent elections, Mehta remained loyal to the party and helped strengthen it at the district level. His strategic acumen as district president in 2020 helped the Grand Alliance sweep all six Assembly seats in Aurangabad and secure both Aurangabad and Karakat Lok Sabha constituencies, effectively weakening the NDA’s position in the district.

However, despite his contributions, Mehta felt increasingly sidelined within the party. After recognizing his dissatisfaction, Deputy CM Samrat Chaudhary reached out to him and entrusted him with the responsibility of securing victory for Trivikram Narayan Singh in the upcoming elections. This led Mehta to officially join the BJP.

The Suresh Mehta Factor in Aurangabad

Political analysts suggest that Mehta wields considerable influence not only among the Kushwaha community but also among other backward and extremely backward classes in Aurangabad. His entry into BJP is viewed as a tactical move to counter the influence of RJD MP Abhay Kushwaha in the region. Analysts believe this could create significant obstacles for the Mahagathbandhan-backed Congress candidate in Aurangabad.

While the ultimate impact of this political maneuver will be revealed only on election day, the move has already sparked widespread discussion and speculation in Bihar’s political circles.
