Jharkhand DGP Anurag Gupta Resigns Amid Controversy Over Appointment

Jharkhand Police Chief Anurag Gupta has reportedly resigned from his position as Director General of Police (DGP), sources close to him confirmed, although there has been no official announcement yet. His appointment after retirement had been mired in controversy from the beginning due to legal challenges and disagreements with the central government.

Legal and Political Controversy

Anurag Gupta, a 1990-batch IPS officer, faced legal challenges over his post-retirement appointment. BJP leader and Jharkhand opposition leader Babulal Marandi had filed a petition in the Supreme Court questioning his appointment. However, the Supreme Court dismissed the petition, stating that contempt petitions filed for political purposes cannot be entertained.

The central government had repeatedly communicated its objection to the Jharkhand government, labeling his appointment against the rules. Gupta was also reportedly excluded from UPSC meetings concerning promotions of IPS officers, highlighting the central government’s disapproval.

Confusion Over Role and Promotions

Further controversy arose regarding promotions of DSP-rank officers under Gupta’s tenure. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) reportedly deferred decisions on several promotion cases due to the uncertainty over his term extension, which increased the ambiguity surrounding his continued role as DGP. Sources suggest that without central approval, his continuation in the post was untenable, leading him to submit his resignation.
