Historic Rescue in Himachal: 7-Foot Black King Cobra Undergoes Successful Surgery After Debris Collapse

**

An extraordinary act of compassion and wildlife conservation unfolded in Himachal Pradesh when a seven-foot-long Black King Cobra was rescued, treated, and released back into the wild after sustaining serious injuries in a debris collapse.

Hamirpur: In a remarkable first for Himachal Pradesh, a seven-foot Black King Cobra underwent a successful surgical operation after being injured in a house collapse triggered by heavy rains in Jasri village, Barsar subdivision, Hamirpur district. This rare incident has not only set a precedent in wildlife care but also stands as a powerful example of humanity, sensitivity, and coexistence with nature.

According to DFO Ankit Kumar Singh, “This is the first instance in Himachal where a venomous snake was operated on and rehabilitated back into the wild. It’s a true reflection of compassion and awareness toward wildlife. Our team worked with utmost dedication and care, and we are proud of this achievement.”

Snake Couple Found Together
Snake rescuer Jasveer Patial, who led the daring rescue operation, recalled that when he reached the site, he found the injured cobra entangled with another snake — believed to be its mate. “They appeared to be a pair — a male and a female cobra,” Patial said. “While the male was seriously hurt under the debris, the female managed to slither away unharmed.”

Displaying remarkable courage, villagers did not panic upon spotting the injured cobra. Instead, they immediately informed Jasveer, who carefully extracted the bleeding reptile from the debris and provided first aid. When the cobra’s condition worsened, Jasveer sought assistance from the Forest and Animal Husbandry Departments.

Life-Saving Operation
The Forest Department team transported the cobra to the Veterinary Hospital at Bijhri, where Dr. Vishwadeep Rathore conducted the treatment. “The cobra had deep wounds and signs of infection. We administered antiseptic medication and stitched two major cuts,” Dr. Rathore explained. “In my entire career, this was the first time I operated on a venomous Black King Cobra — and successfully.”

The cobra was kept under observation for two days and made a complete recovery. Once declared fit, the Forest Department safely released the majestic reptile back into its natural forest habitat.

This unique incident has captured public admiration across Himachal Pradesh — symbolizing the rare harmony between humans and wildlife, where empathy triumphed over fear.
