Gold Smuggling Foiled: BSF Seizes Gold Worth ₹55 Lakh Hidden in Bike Footrest Near Bangladesh Border

Kolkata: In a major crackdown on cross-border smuggling, the Border Security Force (BSF) personnel deployed along the India–Bangladesh border in Murshidabad district of West Bengal have seized gold worth ₹55.35 lakh and arrested one smuggler. The accused was transporting the gold on a motorcycle and was promised only ₹2,000 for the job.

According to a senior BSF officer, troops of the 71st Battalion stationed at the Boyraghat Border Outpost (BOP) received specific intelligence about an attempt to smuggle gold across the international border. Following the alert, the troops intensified vigilance in the area.

Gold Hidden Inside Bike Footrest

Around 10 a.m., BSF personnel noticed a man riding a motorcycle near the checkpoint in a suspicious manner. He was immediately stopped for questioning, and a detailed search of the vehicle was carried out. During the inspection, the soldiers discovered two gold biscuits and two small gold pieces cleverly concealed inside the bike’s footrest.

The suspect was identified as a resident of Pirozpur village, under the Raghunathganj police station limits in Murshidabad. Upon interrogation, he admitted that the motorcycle had been handed over to him by a local person to deliver to someone else, and he was unaware that gold was hidden inside.

Only ₹2,000 Promised for Delivery

During questioning, the accused revealed that he was offered just ₹2,000 for transporting the motorcycle. The total weight of the recovered gold was 461.29 grams, valued at ₹55,35,480.

The seized gold, along with the motorcycle and the arrested individual, has been handed over to the concerned customs and law enforcement authorities for further investigation and legal proceedings.

BSF officials stated that this seizure once again highlights the persistent efforts of smugglers operating along the Indo-Bangladesh border and reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring zero tolerance against smuggling activities in the region.
