Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu lauded Indian women’s cricket team’s star fast bowler Renuka Singh Thakur for her stellar performance in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025. In a phone conversation on Monday, CM Sukhu announced a cash reward of ₹1 crore in recognition of Renuka’s contribution to India’s historic victory.
CM Sukhu Applauds Renuka’s Performance
The Chief Minister expressed immense pride, saying, “I watched how brilliantly you bowled under pressure. The entire state of Himachal is proud of you.” He also mentioned that the semi-final and final matches were particularly impressive, marking the first women’s cricket matches he had watched in full.
During the call, Renuka appeared to request a government job in addition to the cash award. CM Sukhu responded positively, saying, “Yes, I will definitely do that. You’ve met me before; now let’s talk in person. First, stay happy. Thank you.”
Renuka’s Journey of Struggle and Success
Hailing from Parsa village in Rohru Tehsil, Renuka overcame challenging circumstances to earn her place in the Indian women’s cricket team. Her mother, Sunita Thakur, shared that Renuka started her career earning just ₹1,500, and at one point had to borrow ₹15,000 to buy cricket shoes. Despite financial hardships, Renuka never gave up, fulfilling her late father’s dream of seeing a family member represent India in cricket.
Sunita Thakur emphasized that the government should honor Renuka with a permanent job, recognizing her achievement in bringing pride not just to Himachal Pradesh, but to the entire nation.
Celebrations in Her Hometown
Following India’s World Cup triumph, Renuka’s family and villagers in Parsa, Shimla district, celebrated with drums and festivities. Renuka’s outstanding bowling performance was hailed as a key factor in India’s victory, making the win a moment of pride for the entire state.
