Bilaspur Train Tragedy: One-and-a-Half-Year-Old Survives, Mother Loses Life in Heart-Wrenching Accident


A tragic scene has emerged from the Bilaspur train accident, leaving the nation in shock. Among the victims, a one-and-a-half-year-old boy, Mukhtaar Yadav, miraculously survived after being critically injured, while his mother, Leela Yadav, lost her life in the collision.

The accident occurred around 4 PM near Lal Khadan, between Gatora and Bilaspur stations, when a freight train collided with the Gevra Road–Bilaspur MEMU local train (68733). The mishap has so far claimed 11 lives and left over 14 passengers injured. Both the Chhattisgarh state government and Indian Railways have announced ex-gratia compensation for the bereaved families and the injured.

Injured Passengers

Mukhtaar Yadav is receiving treatment in hospital and remains under observation. Other injured passengers admitted include:

  • Rashmi and Santosh Hansraj (50) – Apollo Hospital
  • Kavita Yadav (30) – Railway Hospital, Raipur
  • Anjala Sahu (49) – Kapn
  • Shyam Devi Gautam (64) – Kapn
  • Pritam Kumar (18) – Jayram Nagar
  • Shailesh Chandra (35) – Sirgitti, Bilaspur

Rescue operations were immediately launched, and now damaged coaches and freight wagons are being cleared from the tracks using cranes.

Government Response

Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai expressed his condolences and announced assistance for the victims:

  • ₹10 lakh for the families of deceased passengers
  • ₹5 lakh for seriously injured passengers
  • ₹1 lakh for other injured passengers

The district administration and railway teams are providing all necessary medical care and support to the affected families. The Railway Safety Commissioner (CRS) will conduct a detailed investigation into the causes of the accident to recommend corrective measures.

Impact on Rail Services

The accident has caused a complete disruption of the Mumbai-Howrah rail line, forcing several train cancellations and diversions. Crowds of stranded passengers have gathered at nearby stations. Railways are expediting track clearance and repairs to resume normal train operations as quickly as possible.

This tragic incident highlights the urgent need for rail safety measures while showing the resilience of survivors like young Mukhtaar Yadav, who endured the horrifying accident.
