The death toll in the Bilaspur train accident has risen to 11, marking it as the sixth major rail disaster in India this year. The collision occurred when a local MEMU train connecting Gevra and Bilaspur Junction collided with a freight train on Tuesday around 4 PM, leaving at least 20 passengers injured.

Railway officials have announced ex-gratia compensation for the victims’ families: ₹10 lakh for each deceased passenger, ₹5 lakh for seriously injured passengers, and ₹1 lakh for those with minor injuries.

Preliminary Cause: Signal Violation

The South East Central Railway (SECR) indicated that the accident was likely caused by the MEMU train passing a signal at danger. The preliminary assessment suggests that the loco pilot may have ignored an automatic signal, leading to the catastrophic collision. In the impact, the train engine and one coach mounted onto the roof of the last freight wagon, trapping passengers under debris for a significant time until rescue teams arrived.

A detailed investigation will be conducted by the Railway Safety Commissioner (CRS) to determine the exact cause and recommend corrective measures.

Relief and Rescue Operations

Immediately after the accident, relief trains and medical teams were dispatched from Bilaspur. Injured passengers are receiving treatment at the Chhattisgarh Institute of Medical Sciences and nearby private hospitals. Bilaspur District Collector Sanjay Agarwal confirmed that all necessary medical facilities and support are being provided.
