Pregnancy can be a stressful time, and sometimes, family members insist on decisions that go against the wishes of the mother. A recent case highlights just how critical it is to respect a woman’s choices during labor.
A woman, suffering intense labor pains, arrived at the hospital around 2 a.m., unable to even undergo a checkup due to the severity of her pain. She repeatedly told the attending gynecologist, Dr. Samra Masood, “I do not want a normal delivery. Please perform a C-section. I will not lie down for a vaginal birth.”
Despite her clear request, her family insisted that only a normal delivery would be acceptable. Dr. Masood recalls that even in such an emergency, the family refused to consider a cesarean section, saying, “We want a normal delivery only. No C-section.”
A Mother’s Right to Choose
Dr. Masood emphasizes that a mother, who has carried her baby for nine months, is fully capable of deciding how she wants to deliver—vaginally or via cesarean. She asserts that medical professionals and family members have a responsibility to respect the mother’s choice, especially when she is in pain and explicitly expressing her preference.
This case serves as a reminder that the mother’s autonomy and rights should always come first, and no decision regarding delivery should be imposed against her will.
