Why Women in Villages Often Have Normal Deliveries: Dr. Aruna Kalra Explains Two Key Reasons

It’s a common observation that women in villages tend to have normal, vaginal deliveries more often than cesarean sections. Many parents and expectant mothers find this surprising. According to gynecologist Dr. Aruna Kalra, there are two major reasons behind this trend that help explain why normal delivery is more common among rural women.

1. Physical Activity During Pregnancy
Dr. Kalra, in an Instagram video, highlighted that staying physically active throughout pregnancy plays a crucial role in facilitating a normal delivery. Women in villages, as well as domestic helpers, are often physically active in their daily routines, which strengthens their body and prepares them for labor.

2. Squatting and Sexual Activity Support Normal Delivery
Another factor, Dr. Kalra explains, is the habitual use of Indian-style toilets, which involves squatting. This position helps maintain pelvic strength and flexibility, aiding the delivery process. Additionally, staying sexually active during pregnancy, including the ninth month, may contribute to easier labor. Semen contains prostaglandins, a compound known to assist in cervical ripening and labor progression.

Dr. Kalra emphasizes that both squatting and sexual activity are natural ways to support a smooth, vaginal delivery.

She also notes in another video that recurrent miscarriages, despite normal test results, may sometimes be due to a “non-baby-friendly” uterine environment. In certain cases, a woman’s body may produce autoantibodies that react against the father’s chromosomes carried by the baby, leading to miscarriage.
