Do you feel your child gets upset over minor issues or panics over small challenges? Parenting coach Pushpa Sharma explains why many children today tend to overreact and how parents can help them cope better.
1. Instant Gratification
In a video shared on Instagram, Sharma points out that children today receive almost everything instantly. From mobile notifications providing immediate dopamine hits to shopping rewards and parental assistance for even minor problems, instant gratification has become the norm.
2. Inability to Handle Struggle
As a result, children do not develop their struggle muscles. Even minor obstacles or conflicts can feel overwhelming to them. Parents need to recognize this pattern and guide their children through manageable challenges.
3. Small Problems Seem Huge
Sharma explains that in such environments, children may feel isolated or misunderstood. Without emotional safety, even minor setbacks feel like catastrophes, and small failures trigger panic.
4. Reduced Emotional Presence of Parents
Parents often provide excellent schooling, modern facilities, and solve problems for their children. However, the emotional presence—actively engaging, listening, and guiding—is gradually diminishing, leaving children’s emotional systems underdeveloped.
5. Emotional System Underdeveloped
With comfort abundant and struggle nearly absent, children’s emotional resilience remains weak. According to Sharma, building this resilience requires parents to prioritize emotional support and presence above all material comforts.
By understanding these factors, parents can better support their children in handling small challenges without overreacting.
