Many women experience urinary leakage while coughing or sneezing, a condition that can cause discomfort and embarrassment. According to Gynecologist Dr. Shafali Dadhichi, this problem is commonly linked to weakened pelvic muscles, which can happen gradually with age or due to multiple childbirths.
Why Does Urine Leakage Occur?
Women over the age of 40 often notice urine leakage during sudden pressure on the bladder, such as coughing, sneezing, or laughing. Dr. Dadhichi explains that as women age, the pelvic muscles supporting the uterus, bladder, and rectum gradually weaken. Reduced support can cause these organs to shift slightly, leading to leakage.
Multiple Deliveries Can Increase Risk
Another significant factor is childbirth. Each delivery can stretch and weaken the pelvic muscles, decreasing the support for bladder and urethra, which may result in urinary leakage. This is particularly common if deliveries were long, difficult, or conducted without medical supervision. Home deliveries or those without proper sutures and care can increase the risk of weakened pelvic structures.
Key Preventive Measures and Remedies
Women can take steps to reduce the risk or severity of urinary leakage:
- Maintain proper nutrition including multivitamins, calcium, and adequate protein
- Perform Kegel exercises to strengthen pelvic floor muscles
- Seek medical advice or surgical options if the problem is severe
Dr. Dadhichi emphasizes that with proper care, the condition can be managed effectively, and women can regain control over their urinary health.
