Coriander (cilantro) is a staple in Indian kitchens, adding flavor and aroma to dishes. However, keeping it fresh for more than a couple of days is often a challenge. A creative solution shared by a woman from Lucknow on social media shows how coriander can stay fresh for up to 15 days with a simple storage technique.

Step 1: Clean and Wash Thoroughly

Coriander stalks often carry dirt and dust, which accelerate spoilage. First, wash the leaves thoroughly in a large bowl of water. Discard any yellowed or damaged leaves, as a single spoiled leaf can affect the entire bunch.

Step 2: Remove Excess Water

After washing, do not store the coriander immediately. Hang it briefly over a sink or rack so excess water can drain naturally. This step is crucial to prevent wilting and rot. Wait until no more water drips from the leaves.

Step 3: Trim and Chop

Once dry, separate the leaves from the stems. You may also leave some tender stems intact. Chop the leaves finely. Storing coriander in pre-chopped form saves time during cooking and prevents repeated handling, which can reduce freshness.

Step 4: Dry Between Paper Towels

Spread the chopped coriander on a clean newspaper or paper towel. Cover it with another layer of paper towel. Avoid sun-drying; the goal is to remove surface moisture, not dehydrate. The paper absorbs residual water between the leaves, reducing spoilage in the fridge.

Step 5: Store in an Airtight Jar

Use a glass or plastic airtight jar. Place a layer of paper towel at the bottom, add the chopped coriander, and cover it with another sheet of paper towel. Seal the jar tightly. The paper absorbs excess humidity and keeps the coriander fresh longer.

Step 6: Refrigerate

Store the prepared jar in the coldest section of the refrigerator. This method keeps coriander vibrant, aromatic, and fresh for up to 15 days. Use a dry spoon when scooping out the leaves and close the jar immediately.

This simple, cost-effective hack is ideal for busy individuals who cannot cut fresh coriander every day, helping them save time while keeping their dishes flavorful.
