Jasmine, celebrated for its fragrant white flowers, often produces fewer blooms during winter as the plant enters dormancy. However, with the right care and fertilizer application in February, gardeners can prepare the plant for a prolific flowering season in summer. End of dormancy: Pruning and preparation

As temperatures start to rise in February, it signals the end of dormancy. At this stage, pruning is essential. For a vine-like growth, allow long branches to remain; for a rounded shape, trim extra branches. Ensure that pruning tools are properly sanitized to prevent infections.

After pruning, cut stems may be vulnerable to fungal infections. To protect the plant, either apply a commercial fungicide or use a natural paste of healthy soil on the cut ends.

Soil aeration and root care

Never apply fertilizer directly to compacted soil. Loosen the soil gently around the roots to allow air circulation and remove any dense root tangles. For large potted plants, consider repotting with fresh soil to encourage growth.

Free fertilizers for jasmine

Leaf compost: Rich in nitrogen, leaf compost encourages new leaves and healthy shoots. After aerating the soil, spread a layer of leaf compost around the roots. This improves soil texture and helps retain moisture for longer periods.

Banana peel powder: Jasmine also needs phosphorus and potassium to produce abundant flowers. Banana peels are a natural source of these nutrients. Instead of discarding peels, dry them and grind into a fine powder. Sprinkle 1–2 teaspoons of banana peel powder on top of the soil after adding leaf compost, and cover lightly with soil. This natural booster promotes more flower buds.

Care after fertilization

Proper sunlight and water balance is crucial. Place the plant in a location that receives at least 5–6 hours of direct sunlight daily, as jasmine needs energy from sunlight to produce buds. Water lightly immediately after applying the fertilizers to help them settle into the soil. Subsequently, water only when the soil surface is dry.
