During the winter season, fenugreek (methi) is widely available in the market, and its prices often drop. But did you know that the green leaves of fenugreek can be stored for months while retaining their flavor? Content creator Chetna Bhalla, popularly known as “Chatori Chetna,” has shared an easy hack to preserve methi, which can even be stored as aromatic dried “Kasuri Methi” for up to a year.
Kasuri Methi vs. Regular Fenugreek
Many people assume that dried fenugreek leaves from the market are simply regular methi that has been dried. However, Kasuri Methi is actually a slow-growing variety, with smaller, more fragrant leaves and thinner seeds compared to regular fenugreek seeds (methi dana). Understanding this difference is important when preparing methi for long-term storage.
Washing Before Storage
Start by picking fresh methi from your garden or buying it from the market. Rinse the leaves under running water to remove dirt and gently pat them dry with a kitchen towel. Proper cleaning ensures that the leaves remain fresh longer.
Drying with an Air Fryer
To store methi effectively, it must be fully dried. If you have an air fryer, set it to 110°C (230°F) and dry the leaves for 15 minutes. Open the fryer after 7 minutes to shake the leaves evenly, then continue drying for the remaining 7 minutes. Once done, the leaves will turn into fragrant Kasuri Methi ready for storage.
Drying Without an Air Fryer
If an air fryer is not available, simply spread the washed leaves in a shaded area and let them dry completely over 4–5 days. When the leaves become crisp, they are ready to be stored.
Storing Methi for Long-Term Use
Use a clean, dry, airtight container to store the dried leaves. Seal it properly and keep it in the refrigerator. This method allows methi to retain its aroma and flavor for several months, even up to a year.
Storing Other Leafy Greens
For leafy vegetables like spinach or fresh fenugreek, wash and dry the leaves thoroughly. Wrap them in paper towels and place them in a zip-lock bag before storing in the fridge. This helps keep the greens fresh for an extended period.
With these simple methods, you can enjoy fresh, aromatic methi and other leafy vegetables well beyond their season.
