Sometimes, certain health conditions in children and young adults can alarm families, leaving them confused and worried. A recent case involved an unmarried young girl whose belly began to swell unexpectedly, followed by the sudden cessation of her menstrual cycles. The alarming changes prompted her family to rush her to a doctor, where the true cause of the symptoms was revealed.
What Initially Seemed Like Weight Gain
The gynecologist, Dr. Pragya Gupta, explained that the girl initially appeared to her family as if she was gaining weight, so they initially ignored the swelling. However, as time passed, her abdomen continued to enlarge, and her periods stopped, signaling that something more serious might be occurring.
Fibroid with Tissue Degeneration Identified
Upon medical examination, the doctors discovered a large fibroid measuring approximately 16 to 17 centimeters, which made her abdomen resemble that of a seven-month pregnancy. Further investigation revealed that some portions of the fibroid had started to degenerate.
Cancer Ruled Out
Before reaching Dr. Gupta, there had been concerns about possible cancer. Comprehensive testing, including MRI and mapping, was conducted, and thankfully, the results were negative. This confirmed that the swelling was caused by a benign fibroid rather than malignancy.
Surgical Removal While Preserving Uterus
Dr. Gupta stated that since the patient was unmarried and likely to have children in the future, the priority was to preserve the uterus during the procedure. The fibroid, being very large and surrounding the uterus, posed a challenge. However, the surgical team successfully removed the fibroid while keeping the uterus intact, restoring it to its normal shape.
Recovery and Outcome
The procedure was successful, and the patient is now fully recovered. This case highlights the importance of timely medical attention for abnormal symptoms such as sudden abdominal swelling or missed periods, even when initial signs seem minor.
