The Right Way to Wash Your Hair: Expert Tips from Dermatologist Dr. Aanchal Panth

Washing hair is a natural process essential for personal hygiene. Whether male or female, everyone washes their hair regularly. However, many people are unaware that they might be doing it the wrong way. In this article, we explore the correct hair-washing techniques, recommended frequency, and common mistakes, with insights from dermatologist Dr. Aanchal Panth.

Common Mistakes People Make While Washing Hair

One of the biggest misconceptions is that washing hair daily damages it. Many of us have grown up hearing that frequent use of water and shampoo makes hair weak and causes hair fall. Dr. Aanchal clarifies that this is not true.

“If your scalp is oily, washing your hair daily is perfectly fine. It keeps the scalp clean and strengthens the hair,” she explains in a recent podcast.

How Often Should You Wash Your Hair?

Many women wash their hair only once a week, usually on Sundays, due to time constraints. But during the week, oils build up on the scalp, which, if not removed, can lead to dandruff. Dandruff can further cause skin issues like pimples on the forehead and face.

If daily washing is inconvenient, aim to wash your hair at least 2–3 times a week. One wash per week is insufficient for oily scalps.

Hair Washing Mistakes to Avoid

1. Holding the Dryer Too Close:
Dr. Aanchal advises keeping hair dryers at least 15 cm away from hair. Keeping the dryer too close can overheat and damage the hair.

2. Using Straighteners on Wet Hair:
Never use heat styling tools like straighteners or curlers on wet hair. Make sure your hair is completely dry before using them.

3. Tying Wet Hair:
Avoid tying wet hair into braids or buns. If you want to keep hair off your face, use a small clip to hold the front strands.

4. Brushing Wet Hair Aggressively:
Do not comb wet hair forcefully. Use a wide-tooth comb instead of a fine-tooth one to detangle hair gently. Patience is key if your hair is tangled.

Proper hair care is more than just washing—it involves avoiding common mistakes and understanding your hair type. Following these expert tips can help maintain healthy, strong, and shiny hair.
