Most people instinctively try to kill them by crushing them with slippers, but according to YouTuber and home-remedy expert Ankur Nandan, this common practice can actually be harmful to health. He suggests a natural and safer method to get rid of cockroaches without using toxic chemicals.

Cockroaches are often found crawling on kitchen slabs, near sinks, and in bathroom drains. While crushing them may seem like an instant solution, Ankur Nandan warns that it can spread dangerous bacteria throughout the house rather than solving the problem.

Why Crushing Cockroaches Is Risky

Ankur explains that cockroaches carry harmful bacteria such as Salmonella in their bodies. When crushed, these bacteria can spread across floors and even stick to footwear, increasing the risk of contamination. Moreover, cockroach eggs can survive even after being crushed, potentially leading to a rapid increase in their population. This is why repelling cockroaches instead of killing them is considered a wiser and safer approach.

Neem Oil: A Natural Insect Repellent

Neem oil is known for its powerful insect-repelling properties. It contains a compound called azadirachtin, which disrupts the reproductive cycle of cockroaches and keeps them away. The strong smell of neem oil is highly unpleasant for cockroaches, making it an effective deterrent. According to Ankur Nandan, neem oil is far safer than chemical sprays and poses no harm to humans or pets.

Using Neem Leaves as an Alternative

If neem oil is not available, fresh or dried neem leaves can also be used. Placing neem leaves in kitchen corners, near food storage areas, or inside cupboards creates a natural barrier. Their bitter smell makes it difficult for cockroaches to enter these spaces.

How to Make Neem Spray at Home

Ankur Nandan suggests a simple homemade solution. Mix 10–15 drops of pure neem oil in one glass of water and pour the mixture into a spray bottle. Spray it in areas where cockroaches are commonly seen, such as under the sink, near drains, behind cupboards, and under the refrigerator.

Best Time to Spray

Cockroaches are most active at night. Therefore, Ankur advises spraying the neem solution before going to bed. After cleaning the kitchen, spray the solution around drains, under the gas stove, and in dark corners to prevent cockroaches from entering during the night.

Along with neem spray, maintaining cleanliness is essential. Cockroaches are attracted to leftover food and dirt. Avoid leaving dirty utensils in the sink overnight, clean food crumbs from the floor, and seal cracks and gaps in walls or cabinets.
