Television actor Gulfam Khan is a familiar face to Indian audiences, known for her powerful performances across popular serials. Behind the success, however, lies a deeply personal story marked by grief, betrayal, illness and emotional upheaval. Despite losing her parents at a young age, enduring a toxic relationship, and battling a serious health condition, Khan chose resilience over defeat.
In the Meri Kahani series, the actor opens up about the strength that shaped her life and career.
Life taught me how to fight
“I have seen many ups and downs in my life and career, but I never gave up,” Khan says. Losing her parents early forced her to grow emotionally stronger. “When I realized I could survive without my parents, I felt I could survive anything. Life gave me pain, but it also gave me the courage to face it.”
She admits to experiencing betrayal in friendships and surviving a toxic romantic relationship, yet she refused to let bitterness define her. “I chose to love myself and kept finding ways to move forward.”
Staying young at heart
Khan believes discipline and hard work shaped her generation differently. “We worked relentlessly in our youth. Even when we had comforts, we chose effort and independence,” she reflects. Today, she still dedicates an hour daily to herself — her “me time” — which includes yoga, dance, badminton, or brisk walking. “That hour keeps me grounded,” she says.
Refusing to surrender to illness
At 27, Khan was diagnosed with premature arthritis — a condition more common in later life. Doctors told her it could not be fully cured. She refused to accept that verdict. Through physiotherapy, exercise and gym training, she gradually reduced her pain and regained mobility.
Even during health struggles, her acting career continued uninterrupted. Over the years, she has appeared in numerous television shows including Lipstick, Aladdin – Naam Toh Suna Hoga, Astitva, Diya Aur Baati Hum, Bhagyalakshmi, Ishq Ka Rang Safed, and Dhruv Tara, among others.
Not afraid of ageing
Khan speaks candidly about physical changes after 40, including hormonal shifts and slower metabolism. Instead of fearing them, she adapted her lifestyle. Increased physical activity, dietary discipline and cooling foods helped her regain balance. “I changed with my age rather than fighting it,” she says.
Books as lifelong companions
Reading and painting serve as her emotional refuge. “Books have never let me feel alone. For me, reading and painting are forms of meditation,” she shares. Immersed in a book or canvas, she disconnects from the outside world and reconnects with herself.
Gulfam Khan’s story is not just one of survival but of conscious resilience — a reminder that hardship can coexist with strength, and that healing is often a choice made daily.
