Scientists Recommend Plant-Based Diet to Reduce Risk of Chronic Kidney Disease

Recent studies suggest that adopting a plant-based diet while reducing meat consumption can significantly lower the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD). A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains helps keep kidneys healthy and reduces inflammation.

What is a Plant-Based Diet?

A plant-based diet primarily includes vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and unsaturated oils. Limited amounts of fish and chicken may be included, while red meat, processed meat, refined grains, extra sugar, and starchy vegetables are minimized or avoided altogether.

Health Benefits for Kidneys

According to Thomas M. Holland, Assistant Professor and research expert at the Institute for Healthy Aging, a plant-based diet is scientifically proven to support kidney health. People who closely follow this diet have a lower risk of developing CKD compared to those who consume more meat. Controlling sugar and fat intake also helps reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, further protecting kidney function.

Rising Concern of CKD

Chronic kidney disease currently affects around 10% of adults worldwide, and experts predict that by 2040 it could become the fifth leading cause of death globally. The growing prevalence highlights the importance of dietary and lifestyle interventions for kidney health.

Study Details

The findings are based on a long-term study of over 179,000 adults aged 40–69 across England, Scotland, and Wales. Over a 12-year follow-up, 4,819 participants (2.7%) developed CKD. Researchers concluded that plant-based diets not only benefit kidney health but are also environmentally sustainable.
