Marriage is no longer a decision people rush into. It requires time, emotional readiness, and a partner who supports your dreams. Perhaps this is why today’s young generation is increasingly cautious about tying the knot. Actor and singer Shehnaaz Gill, popularly known as “Punjab’s Katrina Kaif,” is the latest to reflect this sentiment.
Shehnaaz, who is currently in the spotlight for her remarks on marriage, has made it clear that she is not ready yet — though she hasn’t ruled it out entirely.
What Did Shehnaaz Say About Marriage?
In a conversation with IANS, Shehnaaz remarked:
“Marriage is not compulsory. If you don’t want to marry, that’s completely fine. And those who want to marry, that’s also perfectly okay. I feel I may not marry — but I can’t say I will never marry. Who knows, I might even get married tomorrow! I just need to make the right decision for myself.”
Speaking about relationships and marriage from a woman’s point of view, Shehnaaz added:
“It’s a big, life-changing decision. A woman leaves her parents’ home and entrusts her entire life to someone. She does everything for him — but she has no idea what kind of person he will turn out to be. So let’s see what the future holds.”
Why Are Today’s Youth Hesitant About Marriage?
1. Career and Financial Pressure
Young people today prioritise their career and financial stability. With rising responsibilities after marriage, many feel they won’t be able to maintain their professional growth. This is one reason even committed couples delay marriage.
2. Fear of Losing Freedom
Personal freedom ranks high for today’s generation. They fear that after marriage, social and family responsibilities will limit their individuality — a concern that makes them hesitant to commit.
3. Fear of Relationship Failure
Increasing divorce and separation cases have created anxiety around marriage. Many fear emotional stress, conflict, and societal pressure if the relationship doesn’t work — making live-in or casual relationships feel like safer alternatives.
4. Burden of Responsibilities
Marriage brings not only a partner but an entire family’s expectations. Young people prefer enjoying their independence and feel unprepared for such heavy responsibilities at an early stage in their lives.
Marriage: A Decision That Demands Thoughtfulness
Marriage remains one of the most significant decisions of life — one that must be taken calmly, responsibly, and at the right time. As Shehnaaz Gill’s candid views reflect, today’s youth are not against marriage; they simply want to make the choice with clarity, confidence and the right partner.
