Pregnancy Test Positive? Couples Must Avoid These 5 Mistakes in the First 48 Hours

Finding out that you are pregnant is one of the happiest moments in a couple’s life. But along with joy, it often brings anxiety about whether everything will go smoothly. This stress can sometimes lead to mistakes that are unnecessary and increase tension.

Expert Advice from Senior Gynecologist Dr. Aria Raina
Senior gynecologist Dr. Aria Raina recently shared advice in a YouTube video for couples who get a positive pregnancy test. She highlighted five common mistakes to avoid in the first 48 hours, as overthinking during this period can make things worse.

1. Don’t Keep Retesting
A positive home pregnancy test is usually reliable, especially after a missed period. According to ACOG and FOGSI guidelines, there is no need to repeatedly retest. Doing so only increases unnecessary stress.

2. Beta-hCG Blood Test Only When Necessary
Blood tests, including Beta-hCG, should only be done if there are concerns such as unusual bleeding, a history of ectopic pregnancy, or prior miscarriages. Couples should avoid unnecessary testing.

3. Avoid Assuming a High-Risk Pregnancy Immediately
Not every pregnancy needs to be treated as high-risk from day one. Online searches and social media often exaggerate minor symptoms and link them to miscarriage, causing unnecessary anxiety. Couples should focus on staying calm.

4. Steer Clear of Smoking, Alcohol, and Extreme Exercise
Dr. Raina advises avoiding alcohol, smoking, and intense exercise immediately after a positive test. These habits can impact fetal health and early pregnancy stability.

5. Start Folic Acid and Eat a Balanced Diet
Begin taking folic acid supplements promptly to reduce the risk of neural tube defects. Include home-cooked meals and seasonal fruits in your diet to provide essential nutrients. A balanced diet is far more important than eating “for two.”

Final Note
Pregnancy is a beautiful journey, and the first 48 hours should be about celebrating and taking small, mindful steps. Avoiding these common mistakes helps reduce stress and ensures a healthier start to this new chapter.
