Pea-based dishes are loved by everyone, but peeling a kilogram of peas can be a time-consuming and tedious task. To save hours of finger work and effort, Aradhya’s Kitchen has shared an ingenious trick that can peel 1 kg of peas in just five minutes using a rolling pin and hot water.
Soften the Peas
The first step is to slightly cook the peas to loosen their skins. Take a large pot of water and bring it to a boil. Add the peas, making sure they are fully submerged, and boil for just one minute. This softens the outer skin while keeping the peas fresh and intact inside.
Prepare the Cloth Bundle
Drain the peas from hot water and transfer them to a clean cotton cloth or kitchen towel. Fold the cloth to form a bundle, similar to a pouch, and secure it with a rubber band or knot. Use a thick cloth so that the peas remain in place while being rolled, preventing them from bursting prematurely.
The Magic of the Rolling Pin
Place the cloth bundle on a flat surface and gently roll a rolling pin over it. The heat from the water has softened the skins, so even light pressure will crack the pods and release the peas. No extra force is needed—this method is effortless and safe for your fingers.
Separate Peas from Skins
After 2–3 minutes of gentle rolling, most pods will open automatically. Open the bundle to find the peas separated from the skins. Simply remove the skins, and in less than five minutes, one kilogram of peas is peeled without touching a single pod manually.
Storing the Peeled Peas
Peeled peas can be used immediately. If you wish to store them, place the peas in cold water for a few minutes, drain, dry, and store them in a zip-lock bag in the freezer. This keeps the peas fresh for weeks while maintaining their natural taste and texture.
With this simple trick from Aradhya’s Kitchen, peeling peas is no longer a tedious chore, saving both time and effort while keeping your hands clean.
