Cancer risk can increase due to common lifestyle habits such as staying up late, consuming junk food, and sitting for extended periods. According to Dr. Sridharan M, Consultant – Surgical Oncology at Manipal Hospital, Goa, these habits disrupt hormones, metabolism, and the immune system, creating conditions that can lead to multiple types of cancer.
Our bodies function according to a 24-hour biological cycle that regulates hormones, cell repair, metabolism, and immunity. Disturbing this rhythm by staying up late, changing sleep patterns frequently, or exposure to excessive light at night can elevate the risk of hormone-related cancers such as breast and prostate cancer. Reduced melatonin levels caused by night-time light exposure can also contribute to tumor growth. Maintaining a regular sleep schedule is essential for long-term health.
Junk Food and Ultra-Processed Foods
Consumption of junk food and ultra-processed foods impacts inflammation, metabolic health, and body weight—factors closely linked to cancer risk. These foods are high in calories but low in nutrition, leading to obesity and insulin resistance, both of which can contribute to several types of cancer.
Obesity: A Root Cause of 12 Cancers
Dr. Sridharan warns that obesity, often fueled by processed and ultra-processed foods, is a major risk factor for at least 12 types of cancer, including breast, colon, and pancreatic cancer. Processed meats and fried foods further increase susceptibility.
Sedentary Lifestyle
Modern lifestyles involve prolonged sitting at work, during commutes, and in front of screens. Studies indicate that extended sedentary behavior increases the risk of ovarian, endometrial, colon, breast, and prostate cancers, even if individuals engage in occasional exercise. Long hours of sitting contribute to obesity, slow metabolism, and weakened immunity, creating an environment conducive to cancer development.
Increased Risk from TV and Screen Time
Excessive television or screen time has also been linked to a slightly higher risk of esophageal, gastric, and colon cancers. Combined with sedentary habits, poor diet, and irregular sleep, these factors significantly elevate lifetime cancer risk.
Doctor’s Advice to Reduce Risk
To minimize cancer risk, Dr. Sridharan recommends:
- Maintain a regular sleep schedule and limit night-time light exposure.
- Reduce intake of ultra-processed and junk foods; favor fresh fruits, vegetables, and nutritious meals.
- Engage in daily physical activity, from light to moderate intensity.
- Avoid prolonged periods of sitting.
By making these small but consistent lifestyle adjustments, individuals can significantly lower their lifetime risk of developing cancer.
