Washing heavy blankets and quilts during winter is often considered one of the most exhausting household chores. Once soaked in water, these bulky bedding items become extremely heavy, making hand-washing almost impossible. To avoid the effort, many people turn to laundry services or dry cleaning, which can cost thousands of rupees.
However, popular YouTuber Sangeeta Tyagi has shared a simple, budget-friendly, and effective desi technique that allows you to wash heavy blankets at home without lifting or scrubbing them by hand. Using just a kadhai (deep pan) and a mathani (hand whisk), this method not only cleans thoroughly but also protects the fabric fibers.
Step 1: Prepare a Powerful Cleaning Solution
To remove deep-seated dirt and odor, prepare a special cleaning mixture. In a bowl, add:
- One sachet of shampoo
- One tablespoon of baking soda
- One tablespoon of liquid detergent
- Half a cup of water
Mix well. Shampoo keeps the blanket fibers soft, while baking soda helps eliminate stubborn stains and unpleasant smells.
Step 2: Use the Kadhai for Better Cleaning
Instead of using the mixture directly, heating it enhances its effectiveness. Fill a kadhai halfway with water and place it on the stove. Once the water starts boiling, add the prepared mixture and mix well. Then add two tablespoons of vinegar, which helps restore brightness and kills bacteria. Allow it to boil once or twice, then turn off the heat.
Step 3: Wash with a Mathani—No Scrubbing Required
Pour the hot mixture into a large tub filled with warm water. Since a wet blanket is extremely heavy, avoid rubbing it with hands. Place the blanket in the tub and use a mathani to press and move it up and down. This motion allows the cleaning solution to penetrate deep into the fibers, loosening dirt without physical strain.
Step 4: Soak and Flip Easily
Let the blanket soak for 15–20 minutes. Continue pressing occasionally with the mathani. If flipping the blanket feels difficult, use the handle of the whisk to turn it over. This ensures even cleaning of every section without causing back or arm pain.
Step 5: Rinse Thoroughly
Drain the dirty water and refill the tub with clean water. Rinse the blanket two to three times, using the mathani to press out soap residue. Repeat until the water runs completely clear.
Step 6: Smart and Quick Drying Method
Drying heavy blankets can be tricky. Spread the blanket over a plastic chair for about 15 minutes to allow excess water to drip out. Once the weight reduces, place it in the washing machine’s dryer. After spinning, dry it under sunlight. This method ensures faster drying and prevents damp odors.
Final Word
This simple kadhai-and-mathani technique offers a practical alternative to expensive dry cleaning. It saves money, reduces physical effort, and keeps blankets fresh, clean, and long-lasting — making winter chores far more manageable.
