Lung Cancer in India: 60,000 Deaths Annually, 5 Early Warning Signs Often Ignored

Lung cancer is rapidly emerging as a major public health concern in India. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), cases have been steadily increasing—from around 63,708 in 2015 to an estimated 81,219 in 2025. Smoking remains the primary cause, with nearly 10 crore adults in India identified as smokers. Environmental pollution is another significant factor, and studies suggest that 85–90% of lung cancer cases are linked to smoking.

Both men and women are affected, but a worrying trend is that most patients visit doctors only in advanced stages, making treatment difficult. Consequently, lung cancer has one of the highest mortality rates, claiming approximately 60,000 lives in India every year.

Preventive Measures for Healthy Lungs
Maintaining lung health requires simple lifestyle habits:

  • Wear a proper mask when stepping out to protect against dust, smoke, and pollution.
  • Perform light daily breathing exercises to strengthen lung muscles.

Early Symptoms of Lung Cancer
Identifying warning signs early can save lives. Here are five symptoms that should never be ignored:

  1. Persistent Cough – Long-lasting coughs are often dismissed as seasonal allergies or mild infections. However, a cough that lasts for weeks, worsens, or produces blood-stained or rust-colored phlegm could indicate lung cancer.
  2. Chest Pain or Discomfort – Pain in the chest should not always be attributed to heart problems. Lung cancer can also cause persistent or sharp pain that worsens with deep breaths, coughing, or laughing. The pain may even radiate to the shoulders or back.
  3. Shortness of Breath – Difficulty breathing during routine activities, like climbing stairs or walking short distances, may signal a tumor blocking airways or fluid accumulation around the lungs.
  4. Unexplained Weight Loss – Rapid weight loss without changes in diet or exercise, often accompanied by fatigue and loss of appetite, can be an early warning sign of lung cancer.
  5. Frequent Lung Infections – Recurrent bronchitis or pneumonia may indicate underlying lung problems. Tumors can weaken the immune system or block airways, making infections more frequent and recovery slower.
