“If I Had Listened to My Doctor, I Would Be Dead by Now”: Woman Survives Rare, Aggressive Cancer

New Delhi: Cancer is a formidable disease, and some rare types are highly aggressive, spreading quickly and leaving little room for survival. One woman recently shared her harrowing experience of fighting such a deadly cancer, highlighting how medical negligence almost cost her life.

A Doctor’s Oversight Nearly Fatal
Doctors are often seen as lifesavers, guiding patients through life-threatening conditions. However, they are human, and sometimes oversight or lack of urgency can have severe consequences. This was the case for Taryn Hillin, who recounted her story on HuffPost under the title “If I Had Listened to My Doctor, I Would Be Dead by Now.”

In 2019, Taryn visited a new Ob-GYN who found a 2-centimeter tumor in her uterine cervix. When Taryn asked if it could be cancer, the doctor dismissed it as a possible fibroid, benign growth, or polyp and scheduled a biopsy four weeks later due to her upcoming leave. Concerned and anxious about the delay, Taryn sought advice from her previous doctor.

Timely Action Saves Life
Her previous doctor acted promptly, ordering a biopsy and additional tests. The results revealed rare, high-grade small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma, a highly aggressive cancer. Taryn underwent chemotherapy, radiation, and extensive surgery, including removal of part of her uterus, cervix, fallopian tubes, vaginal canal, and multiple pelvic lymph nodes. She explained that the cancer spreads rapidly and could have been fatal within weeks. “Had I followed the new doctor’s advice, I would not be alive today,” she said.

Understanding Small Cell Neuroendocrine Carcinoma
According to NeuroEndocrine Cancer Australia, this rare cancer belongs to the neuroendocrine tumor (NET) group and can develop anywhere neuroendocrine cells are present. It is notorious for its rapid growth and lethality.

Common Sites and Symptoms
While it can appear in any part of the body, cases are most often reported in:

  • Gastrointestinal tract
  • Lungs
  • Pancreas
  • Thyroid
  • Pituitary gland
  • Adrenal glands

Common symptoms include:

  • Fatigue
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Shortness of breath
  • Coughing up blood

Diagnosis and Tests
Because the symptoms are common, diagnosis is often delayed. If cancer is suspected, doctors may recommend:

  • Biochemical tests (urine, blood tests)
  • Imaging tests (X-ray, CT scan, MRI)
  • Endoscopy or endoscopic ultrasound
  • Biopsy

Conclusion
Taryn’s experience serves as a reminder that timely medical attention can be life-saving, especially when dealing with rare and aggressive cancers. Patients are urged to trust their instincts, seek second opinions when necessary, and never delay important tests.
